About Teijema Art
I am an autodidact, a self-taught artist.
I grew up in the countryside in the Netherlands with views that stretched far and wide. Idyllic holidays were spent sailing on the Frisian lakes.
at the age of 26, I travelled to Mozambique to volunteer at a school for street children, in Nacala. I lost my heart to Africa and ended up staying in Mozambique for many years.
this is there where I discovered my love for, and interest in drawing. in those days we had no electricity or phones, but we did have paper and pencils.
since those early days of sketching by the light of a paraffin lamp, I have experimented with different media and have grown to love working with oils and charcoal.
i am attracted to wide open spaces and water. considering my early years in the Netherlands and my later years in Africa, this is not surprising and it is evident in most of my paintings. i try to capture the serenity, beauty and mystery of the world we live in.
besides land-and-seascapes i also enjoy painting portraits of different people, from different cultures that i meet in life.
my work has been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Mozambique, Namibia, south Africa and the Netherlands. galleries in cape town, Johannesburg and Nelspruit have carried my work at different times and I have been a regular contributor at exhibitions in the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens in cape town.
